Emerging from their concern to promote the business of design , the Lebanese Graphic Design Syndicate organized a workshop entitled "Techtype", on Saturday July 9th, 2016 from 9.30 am till 6:00 pm, in the Informational International Conference Room - 4th fl, Al Nahar building
Reputed and professional designers from the visual communication industry were assigned to the following program and format:
David Wadmore – London | A visiting senior lecturer in publishing design, Wadmore is involved with the redesign of the new vision and re-designing fonts for several in magazines and newspapers like The Sunday Times, The Sun, The Times, IPC magazines, The European, BBC, NewsUK, Telegraph Media Group, The Nairobi Star, Uganda's top-selling daily newspaper, along with newspapers in Kenya, Nigeria and the Caribbean. David has won design awards with The Times, The European and IPC magazines.
Arlette Boutros – London-Beirut | Arlette Boutros is a distinguished typographer, interior designer and writer. She has lived in the UK since 1976. Arlette graduated in interior design in Lebanon in 1974 before training as a typographer and graphic designer. Specializing in elegant, intricate and ornate calligraphic designs, she has also created a number of original Arabic typefaces, borders and patterns, many of which have been successfully marketed internationally.
Arlette discussed Arabic typography and the difficulty of innovating new Arabic calligraphic designs that are harmonious with Latin designs.
Mourad Boutros – London-Beirut | Mourad Boutros is acknowledged as one of the world’s most outstanding Arabic calligraphers, designers and typographers. He is the author of the acclaimed books Arabic for Designers and Talking About Arabic. His recent projects include the launch of ‘Tanseek’, the first and only harmonious range of Arabic-Latin typefaces and a collaborative series of oil paintings that combine fine art with traditional Arabic calligraphy. Mourad and Arlette Boutros are the founders of Boutros International, which has led the field of Arabic creativity, typography, calligraphy and design for more than 40 years. Working globally, projects have ranged from the creation of Arabic typeface collections for internationally renowned software and design houses to corporate Arabic logotypes, private commissions, consultancy and lectures.
Mourad talked about the techniques of developing new Arabic fonts and the challenges faced by designers in intellectual property protection.
Zaid Al-Hilali - Adobe Dubai | Zaid Al-Hilali is an Adobe Certified Design Specialist Instructor for a number of Adobe applications. He is an Adobe Certified Instructor in Photoshop, InDesign, Digital Publishing Suite and Acrobat Professional. Zaid specializes in desktop publishing. With printing industry experience, Zaid delivers a spectrum of knowledge, skills and techniques covering offset and digital printing, digital publishing for the mobile devices, as well as Adobe applications to creative professionals and novice learners.
Zaid elaborated on the subject of digital printing techniques and digital publishing through the use of smartphones. He also discussed the advancements in smartphone digital design software that aim to bring designers and customers closer.
